The Tarentaise valley, and why La Plagne hotels get booked a season ahead
Some valleys have one good ski area. The Tarentaise has most of the great ones.
This corner of Savoie concentrates the largest linked ski domains in the Alps, and La Plagne sits right in the middle of it. The commune is even named after it, La Plagne Tarentaise. At 92 Montée de la Lovatière, in the heart of Plagne Centre, the PopAlp puts you exactly where the action starts.
That geography explains a lot about how people travel here. Nobody drives up the Tarentaise for a single night. They come for a week, with children, with friends, with a plan that involves early lifts and long dinners. It also explains why La Plagne hotels tend to sell out well before the season opens, and why booking early matters more here than in a city.
What the valley puts within reach from Plagne Centre:
- Paradiski. One of the largest ski areas on the planet, reachable on skis straight from the building.
- Plagne Centre. Shops, restaurants, events and evening entertainment, all within walking distance.
- Two glaciers. High altitude skiing that stretches the season at both ends.

Getting here takes less effort than most visitors expect. The motorway runs to Albertville, then the RN90 climbs towards Aime-la-Plagne. Aime-la-Plagne station is thirty minutes away, and the airports of Chambéry, Lyon and Geneva sit around two hours out. Compared with many hotels in La Plagne scattered across the upper villages, the PopAlp keeps you in the one place where everything converges.
Paradiski at your feet, Plagne Centre at your doorstep
Ski-in ski-out is a phrase that gets stretched. Here it means what it says.
You click in outside the building, you ski away, you come back on your skis. No shuttle timetable, no carrying boots across a car park, no argument about who drops everyone off. On a seven day trip, that saves close to a full day of standing around. Very few hotels in La Plagne can make that claim without an asterisk.
The domain behind the door:
- 225 km of pistes on the La Plagne sector alone.
- Over 400 km across the whole of Paradiski.
- Three linked resorts on a single pass: La Plagne, Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry.
- Two glaciers for high, late season snow.
- A high share of green and blue runs, which makes La Plagne one of the gentlest big domains for beginners and for anyone coming back after years away.
The École du Ski Français meeting points sit a short walk from reception, and the ESF office itself is three minutes on foot. Handing over a child at nine in the morning stops being a logistical problem.
Then comes the part nobody thinks about when comparing prices, and everybody notices on arrival: who actually handles the logistics? In a self catering residence, nobody does. At the PopAlp, our team does, and this is where booking direct beats any comparison site:

Everything the PopAlp puts under one roof
Eight ways to sleep, three places to eat and drink, one ski shop, and a lobby that nobody forgets.
The building does not look like anything else in the resort. Around a hundred multicoloured skis line the balconies, the logo covers the façade, and the lobby opens on a suspended golden egg, a metal staircase that echoes the lifts, an oversized fireplace, a hanging gondola cabin and arcade machines. The PopAlp went with the 1960s rather than carved pine, and it commits.
Rooms, for two to four guests:
- Comfort South room. 20 m², balcony, shower room, on every floor.
- Superior room West. 25 m², balcony, separate toilet.
- Superior room South. 25 m², two to three guests, balcony, flexible bedding with a high storage bed.
- Club West room. 30 m², two to three guests, more space, separate toilet.
- Club Est room. 30 m², two to four guests, east facing mountain view, balcony, sitting area with sofa bed and a separate bedroom.
- Suite Junior South. 60 m², two to four guests, two separate bedrooms including one with a dressing room, bath and shower.
Apartments and penthouses, rented by the week:
- PopAlp apartments. 64 m², four to six guests, two bedrooms with private shower rooms, living room with a double sofa bed, dining room, fully fitted kitchen, balcony.
- Penthouses. 160 m², eight guests, top floor, terrace, Mont Blanc view, four bedrooms with private shower rooms, a large living room and a fully fitted kitchen.
Both give full access to hotel services, and beyond three nights the cleaning and linen change are on us. That combination is rare among self catering options in La Plagne, and it removes the one genuine chore of an apartment holiday.
Every room and apartment comes ready: free wifi, Chromecast TV, Nespresso machine and kettle, safe, desk, wardrobe, blackout curtains, hairdryer, heated towel rail, vegan toiletries, heating, non smoking, daily housekeeping. Room service runs from 19:00 for a supplement.
Three places to eat and drink:
- Le Pop. Our signature brasserie, open to everyone and not only to guests, serving all day, with a large panoramic terrace facing the slopes and a painted ceiling. Lunch from 12:00 to 15:00.
- Le Demi. Reserved for half board guests. Breakfast from 7:30 to 10:00, dinner from 19:00 to 20:45, with a starter buffet, a changing main course offering a vegetarian and a meat option, and homemade desserts.
- Le Lounge. A pop coloured bar facing the pistes, signature cocktails, a considered wine list and sharing boards. Afternoon tea from 16:00 with homemade cookies and pancakes, then drinks by the fireplace with a local beer.
The practical details matter when you travel as a group, and they are worth checking before you compare La Plagne hotels on price alone. Reception never closes. Check-in from 16:00, check-out at 10:00 in rooms and 11:00 in apartments. Three rooms are adapted for guests with reduced mobility, connecting rooms exist, cots are provided on request, and pets under 9 kg are welcome, one per room. For companies, the hotel hosts seminars, study days, meetings, weddings and full buyouts. One honest note to finish: the hotel has no private car park. The Le Boulevard car park is five minutes away on foot, paid, bookable online, with no guaranteed availability.
